Logistics & Expectations
Software & Technical Requirements
- Access to or possession of a computer will be fundamental to the course and a requisite for all students. If possible, students will be asked to bring laptops to class in order to facilitate technical workshops and desk crits.
- Throughout the class, students will be adding their work to a shared Github repository or Google Drive folder. These contributions will also go towards the creation of a digital garden to house and share the research and methodologies developed by the students throughout the course, manifesting the relational methodologies that the course is embracing.
- For technical support there will be short screencasts explaining technical methodologies and processes that the students can watch in their own time and make use of in their assignments, these will be updated during the duration of the course as each project evolves.
Prerequisites
- Knowledge of Python and GIS software is desirable.
- Students are encouraged to make use of Obsidian, a note-taking app that promotes a relational approach to journaling and knowledge bases.
- We will be using Github to share some course material, including code, so students are invited to become acquainted with using the Github desktop client prior to the beginning of the class.
Accessibility & Communications
- We all need accommodations because we all learn differently. If any aspects of this class prevents you from learning or excludes you, please let us know as soon as possible and we’ll develop strategies to meet both your needs and the requirements of the class. Your success in this class is important to us.
- Students will be asked to communicate privately with instructors via email for personal matters
- For group matters and technical support a Slack team will be created to facilitate more fluid dialogue
- We will endeavor to answer as many questions as possible should they arise outside of class. Whilst we encourage students to reach out when needed we also ask that groups take full advantage of the class sessions and technical workshops to cover potential questions.
Class Rules
- Students will be graded on their active participation in class and we look forward to everyone's involvement.
- If anyone is going to be late, or needs to miss class for a real reason, they must let us know in advance.
- Students will benefit not only individually but also collectively from the required readings. These will provide key insights into the practices and expectations of the course and we ask students to dedicate time to them.
- When specified via the course schedule we ask that students submit work due at the beginning of class, this will allow us to provide feedback of a higher value and better support your ongoing work.
- The instructors are dedicated to an inclusive, harassment-free experience for everyone regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, disability, appearance, or religion. Harassment of class participants in any form will not be tolerated.
